NPI Support / Sustaining Engineer I

Position Summary:

Use your education, process knowledge and collaborative skills to make a real difference in this wide-ranging position that will interact closely with cross functional departments throughout the company as well as suppliers and coworkers across the globe.  The role consists of extensive responsibilities in terms of New Product Introduction and line extension system readiness and a secondary responsibility of sustaining engineering projects.

The engineer will be part of a large team charged with product introduction and will be responsible for system readiness in terms of creating and verifying BOM’s, component readiness, drawing status, creation of marketing collateral, instructions and other deliverables.

In addition, there will be a secondary role in sustaining projects where the engineer will be responsible for completing root cause analysis of quality issues, assisting with interdepartmentally initiated process and design improvements as well as facilitating engineering requirements of PPV and VAVE initiatives.  The engineer will be responsible for complete documentation of change justification and detail, presentation of recommendations for review / approval, and iteration of change process if required.  This position will require an emphasis on problem solving techniques and an ability to work effectively with stakeholders in various departments as well as outside entities. 

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Creation of NPI project documentation, review and approval of cross functional inputs and systematic outputs related to projects. Responsible for utilizing & managing a series of internal and external resources to complete all departmental deliverables on a preestablished and agreed to timeline. 
  • Establish BOM integrity by creating the base configuration document through collaboration with product and manufacturing engineers and presenting to IT for coding.  Work with offshore resources to create BOMs for evaluation.  Review and communicate final approval and launch readiness.
  • Work with Quality and Product engineers to establish the proper sequences and visuals for assembly instructions.  Create storyboards for use by technical writers and specialists.  Work with cross functional team to iterate as required and finalize when appropriate.
  • Responsible for working with coworkers to research, propose and initiate process enhancements and general continual improvements.
  • Work with Sustaining Engineering management on identified issues related to design, components, processes, documentation, etc. Use various tools to perform root cause analysis, evaluate financial costs / benefits against various warehouse, production and QC concerns and document and present recommendations to various interested parties.  Document and present the proposed solution and implement upon approval.
  • Initiate drawing and BOM revisions. Will be responsible for creation of Engineering Change Orders, red lining drawings for drafters and checking the drawing updates. Will be responsible for updating product matrix and checking and approving the configuration revisions after IT completion.

Qualifications, Skills and Education

Required Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 1+ years of experience using SolidWorks; General modeling & CAD drafting as well as a basic understanding of the ASME Y14.5 drafting standard.
  • 1+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment and understanding of basic manufacturing and production principles.


 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude. Experience with basic hand tools a plus.
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong work ethic, ability to work effectively without supervision.
  • Ability to plan and organize projects while working to deadlines in fast paced, changing enviornment.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented work style and ability to build effective relationships.
  • Timely and appropriate communication to superiors and peers.
  • Articulate and persuasive; can communicate difficult and complex matters in a straightforward, transparent manner.
