Traffic Operations Manager

Position Summary:

As the Fleet Operations Manager, you'll be analyzing insourcing versus outsourcing viability, as well as insource and develop traffic capabilities at reasonable cost. This includes cross-border inter-facility transfers, inbound port drayage (US and T&E to Mexico), Southern California and other local metro area high-touch customer delivery services. You'll be responsible for acquiring and maintaining an appropriate fleet of vehicles to support the business requirements. Additionally, you will oversee all drivers, including hiring, training/coaching, safety, compliance, quality, customer complaints, discipline/termination, etc.  Finally, the Fleet Operations Manager will drive the establishment of Exemplis as a Freight Forwarder/Broker, to be able to execute on the mission above legally, effectively, and in compliance with all federal and state laws.  Think of this as setting up your own transportation company within Exemplis! 

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:



  • Develop internal capabilities to insource freight forwarding, brokerage, and traffic to drive improved customer service and freight costs



  • Manage company owned, leased, and dedicated vehicles / programs including: maintenance, licensing, registration, and minimizing equipment downtime due to repairs and service



  • Lead Traffic Team and driver associates to ensure superior customer service and associate performance, keeping team members informed, focused, and motivated
  • Provide regular training to drivers to ensure safety, compliance, and excellent customer service.
  • Assist with driver recruitment efforts and oversee new hire training
  • Schedule drivers to meet Transportation routing and delivery requirements




Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all company carrier licenses, authorities, and permits are current and active
  • Ensure compliance with DOT, Company, State and US Federal safety policies and regulations, including all DOT records retention requirements.
  • Review, monitor, and report on the company’s traffic and transportation activities to ensure full compliance with any / all U.S. and Mexico State and Federal requirements, regulations, and laws. 
  • Ensure all drivers meet all US federal and state laws, and Mexico laws where applicable.


General Operations

  • Report on fleet, equipment and driver costs and performance metrics
  • Recommend and implement improvements to reduce costs and increase operating effectiveness
  • Assist in preparing the annual Logistics, Transportation and Shipping budgets related to fleet operations.
  • Implement and maintain software as required.
  • Assist the Logistics team in delivering timely flow of raw materials and finished goods throughout our supply chain network, from vendor to final customer.
  • Prepare analyses, reports and recommendations related to import, export, traffic, transportation, insourcing, and other logistics activities
  • Manage projects related to import, export, traffic, transportation, insourcing, and other logistics activities.

Qualifications, Skills and Education

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years' relevant freight forwarder, broker, traffic manager, or carrier management work experience.
  • Experience in fleet management and driver management.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in dock management, load optimization, on-dock consolidations, cross docking, drayage, freight forwarding, LTL, PTL, TL and pool distribution execution.
  • Project management experience.
  • Master’s Degree.
  • Lean or 6 sigma training/certification.
